Castellon de la Plana, Valencia is a city, an autonomous region in Spain. Castellon de la Plana is the capital of Castellon province, situated on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.
The city counted 172,624 inhabitants in 2007 and is the core of a metropolitan area of 298,678 inhabitants.
From Historically, the city Castellon de la Plana was officially established properly since 1251, after conquering the Kingdom of the Moors in Valencia. During the Middle Ages, the city was protected by ditches, walls and towers, a church was built, later became the cathedral. In the nineteenth century, city walls were demolished and spare, and slowly the city began to expand, this expansion was interrupted by the war of independence against Napoleon (1804-1814).
In the second half of the nineteenth century, the city began to expand again, marked the arrival of the railway, port expansion and construction of buildings representative, such as hospital, casino, theater and parks. In 1991, "University Jaume I" was built, establishing a modern campus.
The local economy is based on industry and tourism. Today, most historical buildings are located in the old town, around Plaza Mayor (Main Square), these include: Llotja del Cànem, built in the first half of the eighteenth century for use by traders of cloth and ropes, a very important activity in the area at that time. Today the building is used by the University for cultural events and exhibitions.
On the northeast edge of town, at the end of a boulevard decorated with orange trees, stands the Basilica of Santa Maria del Lledo (European Hackberry Celtis australis or) there is a basilica dedicated to an image of the Virgin Mary, which was found in 1366 by a farmer while his country land.
