About Gran Canaria Island All Locations - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Gran Canaria is an island in the archipelago "Canary Islands" (in the Atlantic Ocean) that belongs to Spain. It has an area of 1,560.1 km², being the size of the third island in the archipelago. Together with Cape Verde, Madeira and the Azores, the Canary Islands form the Macaronezean ecoregion.
The islands were called "canaries" because of the large number of seals that existed there.
Gran Canaria, the place where the great explorer Christopher Columbus, on his first trip to America, is a place blessed with lush landscapes and friendly temperatures throughout the year. Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands group, located between Tenerife and Fuerteventura, but is the only one of them completely declared a UNESCO natural heritage.
Gran Canaria is also called the "Island of the Continent" due to the diversity of climatic zones. From the top of a snowy mountain you can reach over an hour in the middle of a desert with dunes similar to that of the Sahara, and after another hour you can already be in the middle of a tropical forest with banana and pomegranate plantations.
The capital of the island is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - a cosmopolitan city and one of the largest ports in Spain. On the island there are 133 beaches with different types of sand.
