About Guadix - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
The city is divided into two areas: the one with modern houses and the troglodyte neighborhood, where we find cave houses. Some are really dug in the mountain, others have used mountains or earthen hills as roof and walls. The view is somewhat strange, given the fact that first of all, the pits of smoke rising from the ground are in your eyes. Inside it looks like any other house, but the ceiling is in the form of a vault, slightly asymmetrical walls and small and narrow windows. Lately, due to the growing tourism, many of these homes have been transformed into holiday homes, available for rent.
Some homes now have luxury amenities, others basic. The price for one night varies between 30 and 100 euros, depending on the number of beds available and of course the facilities offered.
The city is visited on foot, no car is needed.
Guadix is a tourist destination and due to its monuments, its proximity to the capital of the province of Granada, as well as to the historical area known as La Alpujarra. Among its historical buildings, the Cathedral of the Incarnation (Catedral de la Encarnación) - one of the most important in the country, declared a site of cultural interest in 1931, next to the Alcazaba de Guadix, which was declared a national artistic monument in the same year. In turn, the cathedral has three architectural styles and has some similarities to those of Granada and Malaga.
There are several other churches, including a monastery founded in 1500 by the Catholic Kings, the Romanian theater accidentally discovered in 2007 when excavations began to build a parking lot, the Cathedral Museum, dedicated to sacred art.
