About Oviedo - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Oviedo is the capital of Asturias principalities, situated on the slopes of a hill 30 km from the coast, a fertile plateau foot chained to the Cantabrian mountains.
The city is also the spiritual and intellectual center of Asturias.
It is said that two monks, Maximo and Fromestanus founded the city in 761. The settlement was soon completed with the construction of churches dedicated to Saint Vincent. However, the archaeological record showed traces of a century, in Roman times.
Former Oventum has kept close ties with the monarchy Asturias since its founding in the eighth century, even becoming the capital of the kingdom. This has left an undeniable atmosphere of the medieval historic center, which in modern times has been carefully framed in the urban city.
Here you have the opportunity to explore the pre-Romanesque art, which has World Heritage status, Costa Verde with lovely scenery and of course the local cuisine.
In the central city is an entire millennium of art presented with monuments and buildings dating from the 8th century until the 18th century.
Oviedo has twelve national monuments, including the most important examples of pre-Romanesque Asturian architecture.
Visitors should not miss the opportunity to visit the famous Gothic cathedral in San Salvador. One of the relics held by the cathedral is a piece of cloth about 84 x 53 cm. Remarkable thing about this material is that both tradition and scientific studies claim that as a canvas cover was used to clean the face of Jesus after the crucifixion.
A thriving industry has grown around its centuries-old center. Its cultural institutions, University, Institute of Asturian Studies, Museums, Athenaeum, "Caja de Ahorros" attract thousands of visitors each year.
Unpredictable weather is a major deterrent to tourism development - average temperatures are generally only slightly higher than those in southern England and rain can be expected at any time of year.
