Santa Pola is currently a coastal fishing and tourist town. The population more than doubles during the summer, with people coming in much of the rest of Alicante province and the Basque Autonomous Community, Madrid, France and Britain, to mention just a few. Island Tabarca (from Alicante) nearby can be visited by ship.
Gran Alacant New Town, 5 km (3 mi) north of Santa Pola along the Bay of Alicante, around a third of the population of the district. Next to it is the carabas, a natural reserve. Gran Alacant is just a few kilometers from Alicante airport and a few hundred meters from Los Arenales, which is located in Elche.
