Torrevieja is a town in the Valencian Community, Spain. It is located in the province of Alicante on the Mediterranean seafront. It has 101,381 inhabitants and is the 5th city of the Valencian Community.
The city covers 71 km ² and has 20 km of shoreline with the following beaches: La Mata, Los Locos, El Cura, El Acequion, Los stranded.
Torrevieja, literally means "old tower" at the beginning of last century there were only guarding the tower a few old houses. Surveillance towers that are scattered up and down the coast, there were Moroccan pirates to see who crossed the Mediterranean Sea for centuries.
Torrevieja is known for its salt lakes, which were originally royal hunting grounds and belonged to the Crown.
In the middle of the 13th - century, residents near Orihuela region were given permission to exploit the salt, a very expensive commodity in the Middle Ages. As the city begins to develop under the name Mata or Torrelamata, as it was known then.
Torrelamata and Ibiza became the most important centers of production of salt in the kingdom of Aragon.
In 1802 when the offices of La Mata and moved to its present location, this led to rapid urbanization of Torrevieja town.
Today Torrevieja produces about a million tons of salt annually, mainly for export, making it one of Europe's leading manufacturer of salt. Occasionally, they run out of salt water and salt to form a dry Crosti.
Mines are due to the amount of iodine in the air, making the area be named one of the most therapeutic areas in the world (according to World Health Organization). People who suffer from arthritis and other diseases, say living there live a healthier life.
