Oviedo is the capital of Asturias principalities, situated on the slopes of a hill 30 km from the coast, a fertile plateau foot chained to the Cantabrian mountains.
The city is also the spiritual and intellectual center of Asturias.
It is said that two monks, Maximo and Fromestanus founded the city in 761. The settlement was soon completed with the construction of churches dedicated to Saint Vincent. However, the archaeological record showed traces of a century, in Roman times.
Former Oventum has kept close ties with the monarchy Asturias since its founding in the eighth century, even becoming the capital of the kingdom.
